Usec. Art M. Evangelista, Administrator, OTS – Office for Transportation Security, DOTr made public the two successful successive interceptions of firearms at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport – Terminal 3.
Last March 9, Thursday, the OTS Security Screening Officers (SSOs) Eileen Laureta and Julio Carando detected and intercepted from the trolley bag of a certain Fil-American passenger Mr. Wilfredo Abelardo, PWD on a wheelchair, a caliber 0.9mm pistol with two (2) magazines loaded with eighteen (18) rounds of live ammunition. The handgun was discovered at the Initial Security Screening Checkpoint of NAIA Terminal-3 Departure Area when the bag was subjected to the initial x-ray check done by OTS screeners.
Mr. Abelardo claimed that the bag containing the gun was mistakenly picked-up from their car by an airport porter.
Illegal possession of firearm and ammunition were charged to Mr. Abelardo after he failed to present all necessary documents.
On March 14, Thursday, also at NAIA Terminal-3, OTS SSOs Manny Oliva and Aries Layugan detected and discovered a dismantled caliber .45 pistol from the backpack bag of a 36 years old Dumaguete-bound passenger – Mr. Verlyn Valenciano. When OTS SSOs questioned Mr. Valenciano of the dark images inside his backpack, Mr. Valenciano claimed that the dark image was just a joystick for his PlayStation computer. But when the backpack was subjected to a manual inspection, the OTS-SSO discovered a handgun dismantled into two parts wrapped with carbon papers and fastened by packaging tape over the PlayStation 4 computer console. Mr. Valenciano was charged for violation of RA 10591.
Usec. Art Evangelista reminds the traveling public to double check their luggage to ensure that No Prohibited items are contained therein before proceeding to the airport for their flight. Please check the OTS website for the list of prohibited items.
